Spider Control Near Me

Spider control in Miami, FL

October 03, 2022

Have you ever found a spider in your home? How did you react?

Most people have some level of arachnophobia–-it’s just how we’re wired. You might jump, scream, run away, or even freeze when you see a spider.

Well, there’s a fifth reaction to seeing a spider: calling pest control.

Native Pest Management’s spider control is designed to get rid of spiders, as well as other pests in your home. You can count on us to solve your problem so you don’t have to be scared anymore. Guaranteed.

Why are Spiders So Scary?

According to the American Psychiatric Association, phobias affect one in ten people in the United States - and of those individuals, over 40 percent of them have fears associated with spiders and other insects.

How can something so small create so much fear? There is actually very little consensus about what makes spiders scary specifically–however, researchers have theorized a few things.

Spiders fall under the category of “fear-relevant animals.” This includes rats, mice, amphibians, snakes, lizards, slugs, snails, cockroaches, and anything similar.

All of these animals produce feelings of disgust, which is an emotion we’ve developed to protect ourselves from anything that carries pathogens and diseases.

So, if you’re afraid of those animals, it means you have a sensitive reaction to disgust. This includes spiders.

We don’t blame you for wanting to get rid of spiders. After all, it’s in our DNA to be afraid.

How do Spiders Get into my House?

Like most Florida pests like ants, cockroaches, silverfish and rodents, spiders enter your home looking for food and shelter. Spiders are first attracted to your home due to the presence of food on the exterior. Usually, we find that flying pests like mosquitoes, gnats and midges are surrounding your home since the lights at night are so attractive to them.

Once spiders find the perfect spot on the outside of your home, they’ll find ways to enter through windows with damaged screens, underneath doors or through the gaps in sliding glass doors.

Spiders can also hitchhike on objects. This often includes boxes, toys, firewood, houseplants and anything else that may be transported from outside in.

A spider may also find its way into your home because of the temperature. Spiders like temperatures of around 70 degrees.

This means that in Florida, the season for spiders is typically between September and February. While some spiders can handle a variety of temperatures, and like the Florida heat, others prefer cooler weather.

Wolf spiders, for example, can live in any climate–some live in volcanic lava tubes, while others live on cold mountaintops. Black widows, on the other hand, like milder temperatures that you’ll only feel in Miami when it cools down.

Are Spiders in Florida Dangerous?

One of the most common questions that our spider control experts are asked is “Are spiders here in Florida dangerous?” While most people will be quick to say they are dangerous, in truth, the answer is rarely. The vast majority of spiders in Florida are non-venomous and do not bite unless you go after them.

However, there are a few that you should look out for. Let’s go through the most common spiders in Florida you might find scary, and we’ll tell you if you should worry.

Black Widow Spiders

Black widow spiders, which are venomous, are native to Florida. To identify a black widow spider, look for (from a safe distance) an hourglass-shaped marking on the underside of their abdomen.

If you find one black widow spider, there’s a very good chance there are more of them. They’re also fast movers, so it can be tough and dangerous to get rid of them on your own.

The safest decision to make when you find a black widow spider is to call a professional pest control company.

Recluse Spiders

Unlike the black widow spider, recluse spiders are not native to Florida. The most common recluse spider you may find in your home is the brown recluse spider, which is identifiable by a violin-shaped marking on its back.

If you believe that you have found brown recluse spiders in your home, we recommend that you get in touch with your Florida spider control experts here at Native Pest Management.

Banana Spiders

Banana spiders are common in Miami, and you may be asking, “are banana spiders poisonous?”

The answer: It depends!

Did you know there are 5 types of banana spiders? The one that you’ll find in Florida is the golden silk orb weaver spider.

These spiders are known for their work of art: their yellow-gold webs. They can produce seven different kinds of silk and some may even have medicinal properties!

Their webs can be anywhere from 6.5-10 feet and can catch bugs, birds and snakes. Their golden masterpieces are also invisible in the sun.

Golden silk spiders are found in Florida, but I hope you’re more in awe than afraid of them now because they’re more dangerous to each other than to humans (the females are a bit aggressive).

They only bite when threatened and even then their bites only leave a mild sting, so you don’t have much to worry about.

If anything, I would say Florida is lucky to have them. Their golden silk webs are nothing but spectacular.

Wolf Spiders

Wolf spiders may be scary and hairy, but luckily, they’re not poisonous.

But, they’re still scary and hairy, so you probably don’t want them in your home. Also, they can bite, even though their venom isn’t poisonous. All and all, like most spiders, they’re an unpleasant experience.

Wolf spiders receive their name from their ability to stalk their prey. They do this alone, making them pretty antisocial spiders.

If you find a wolf spider in your home, you’re in no danger of harm. However, you may still want to get in touch with a pest control company. Native Pest Management can provide expert spider control services so you can feel comfortable in your home again.

Are Spiders Good for the Environment?

While many people have been conditioned to hate all types of spiders, just remember, not all spiders are bad. In fact, most spiders in the Miami area are good!

Spiders play an important role in our local Florida ecosystem. They are nature’s most natural way of reducing flying insects like mosquitoes and gnats that can be a major nuisance in the area.

And since mosquitoes spread diseases, spiders are actively helping reduce an international health crisis.

By keeping populations in check, you could say they’re nature’s pest control. Spiders actually eat more insects than bats or birds.

But we know how it is. It just isn’t in our DNA to appreciate spiders, so there’s a huge difference between knowing they’re out there killing bugs and seeing one in your home.

So if you aren’t remotely interested in saving spiders, that is okay, just contact us instead!

How to Get Rid of Spiders

There is some degree of spider control you can do on your own. The first step to this is cleaning. You can vacuum webs, which may be in the corners, baseboards, bed skirts, under furniture, cupboards, closets, and cabinets.

You can also put together a homemade spider repellent spray. Mix apple cider vinegar with water to spray a brown recluse, and they’ll die from the acidity.

Another way to get rid of spiders is to use diatomaceous earth. Spread the powder where spiders are living in your home, such as in the attic, garage, or tool shed. The powder will degrade the exoskeletons of the spiders, eventually killing them.

Other ways to get rid of spiders

  • Try sticky glue traps: you can purchase these spider traps at stores like Lowes or Home Depot.
  • Insecticides and spray treatments: These store-bought products can create a harmful barrier for spiders if placed in the right places.
  • Install or repair screens: Screens can be a useful tool if you want to open windows or doors for the day without letting the creepy crawlers in.
  • Purchase a spider catcher: This is a handheld device that can pick up spiders and return them outdoors. This is the perfect tool for you if you want spiders to live, just out of your sight.
  • Use airtight containers over cardboard boxes: Spiders will be less likely to hide.

How to Get Rid of Outdoor Spiders

If you find one spider in your home, there’s an extremely likely chance there will be one outside. In fact, even if you don’t see a spider in your home there’s probably one outside. Spiders are common in Florida and if you don’t currently have a home pest control plan, spiders are most likely attracted to your home.

Spiders are going to be attracted to your yard before they want to go inside your home, so if you’re trying to do DIY spider control, outside is a good place to start.

Ways to Get Spiders Out of Your Yard:

  1. Plant spider repelling herbs: Lavender, mint, eucalyptus and citronella are strong herbs that will deter spiders.
  2. Get rid of webs: Do this consistently to keep spiders from returning. After a while, the spiders will get the message and go somewhere else to build their webs.
  3. Reduce hiding spots: Most spiders prefer to be out of sight. Instead of hanging out directly on leaves or flowers, they’ll crawl under rocks, piles of leaves, or dirt.
  4. Turn off outdoor lights: Bright lights attract mosquitoes, flies, and gnats, all insects that spiders feed on. Leaving them off can deter the food source from your home.

How to Prevent Spiders in Miami

If you don’t have a spider problem yet, consider yourself lucky. There are things you can do to prevent seeing spiders in your home as much as possible.

And if you do have spiders, the combo of professional spider control and these tips will keep them from ever coming back.

  • Take care of your yard: Trim shrubs & bushes, mow your lawn.
  • Eliminate cobwebs by vacuuming and dusting.
  • Turn off porch lights and other outdoor lighting unless necessary.
  • Seal openings out the exterior of your home.

Luckily, Native Pest Management focuses on preventative spider control. Our mission is to get rid of spiders for good.
