What Are Sugar Ants?

Odds are that at some point, you have dealt with small ants in your kitchen that seem to love your sugar bowl. Most people call them sugar ants, but did you know that "sugar ants" is a broad term for a number of ant species? "Sugar ant" refers to any household ant that loves sweets.

Types of Sugar Ants in Florida

Florida is home to many different types of ants, including types of sugar ants. In order to know how to deal with sugar ants in your home, it's best to know which species you are dealing with. Here are five of the most common sugar ants you may come across:

Ghost Ants: True to their name, ghost ants seemingly appear out of thin air. Their small size and pale appearance make them difficult to spot. Ghost ants are the most common type of sugar ant in Florida, and often invade kitchens and pantries in search of sugary foods.

Pharaoh Ants: These tiny ants range from yellow to light brown in color and are infamous for their rapid reproduction rates. They're a common sight in Florida's warm climate and have a strong preference for sugary substances.

Argentine Ants: An invasive species from South America that loves sugary food. Argentine ants range from light to dark brown with reddish coloring and a darker color at the tip of the gaster.

Pavement Ants: These ants are more often found outside marching along sidewalks and driveways. They're attracted to your home by moisture and sugary substances.

Acrobat Ants: Acrobat ants are skilled climbers that typically use tree branches or utility lines to invade homes. Their heart-shaped abdomens make them easily recognizable.

How to Get Rid of Sugar Ants

Every species of ant works differently and therefore requires different methods to get rid of them. Regardless of species, though, a preventative approach is always key. Here are a few general tips to help you keep sugar ants out of your home:

Cleanliness: The first line of defense against any pest is a clean living space. Regularly sweep, mop, and wipe down surfaces in your home to eliminate tempting crumbs and spills - especially in your kitchen.

Food Storage: Seal food in airtight containers and promptly clean up spills. Don't leave sugary snacks or fruits exposed on countertops.

Plumbing: Like us, ants need water to live, and sugar ants are often attracted to moisture in your home along with sweets. Fix leaky pipes and faucets, and ensure your gutters and downspouts are in working order.

Natural Repellents: Diatomaceous earth, cinnamon, black pepper, and cayenne pepper are commonly used natural ant repellents that are safe for humans.
